All Black Everything

Black.
What do you think of when you hear the word?
Words that come to my mind?
Strong. Elite. Sexy. Fashionable. Sophistication.

When it comes to men's fashion and accessories, black is a must have staple.

Tuxedo: As a rule, every man should own a tux. It's an expected standard for special events that demands the proper fit. A classic style in a tailored modern silhouette is perfect. Check the two-button jacket with double vented back at J.CREW/$495.00.

Travel Bag: You've made the upgrade from your canvas duffel, I'm sure. A black leather travel bag is a statement piece...shows you like quality. Ensure yours travels well: 45" in all dimensions will get the nod of approval for TSA carry-on regulations.

Personal Accessories: For Apple and Blackberry gadgets, look to the partnership from BENTLEY and Ettinger. Refined precious black leather with contrasting color accents and stitch patterns make these handmade cases stand out. Includes passport holders, luggage labels and portfolios/approx $75 for smartphone case.

For additional luxury goods in black, visit UPTOWN Magazine.

Alford & Hoff - Skincare for Men

A true beauty will use her favorite scrub at least once a week to brighten, smooth and clear her complexion. Whether it's from a high end brand or one concocted in the kitchen, she will gladly indulge in an at-home "spa" experience.

Guys, you want to treat yourself, to make this part of your grooming routine too. This scrub is ideal prior to shaving. The abrasive granules remove dead skin that can trap ingrown hairs and give it a dull appearance. ALFORD & HOFF has a full line of products for your daily regimen but the Microdermabrasion promises to polish flaky cells without irritation, even skin tone and noticeably diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Even claims to give you a more energetic complexion, promote collagen production and is good for all skin types.

Key Ingredients: Aloe, oat, Vitamin E, lactic acid, cactus and samphire extracts plus the diamond shaped magnesium oxide crystals which free impurities and hairs. Exclusive to Bergdorf Goodman stores or online at www.bergdorfgoodman and www.alfordandhoff.com/$85.

Upgrade Your Travel Style

Style shines through even when you're travelling. Don't think just because you're in vacation mode that folks aren't paying attention. Whatever your personal style is, there are some essentials that give you a polished look.

Invest in a good duffel bag for weekend getaways, either leather, wool or canvas. The KENNETH COLE Roma Satchel is a great carry-on. This fully lined bag has two exterior pockets for travel documents, a detachable shoulder strap, and metal feet. I also like the JACK SPADE Bleacher Plaid Ajax Duffel. On sale at www.jackspade.com for $197.50. Passport covers can be customized with your initials. AIAIAI Noise Cancelling Headphones are ideal for long flights. Blocks out crying babies and chatty travellers. And I also suggest a comfortable pair of jeans. Cashmere jeans are more forgiving than denim when you're sitting for a while. Try on NAKED AND FAMOUS Slim Guy Cashmere Jeans/$260. Take along a great pair of shades to hide tired eyes, a good read and you're set.

The Modern Gentleman

The modern man takes all grooming matters into consideration. Definition: a man of style, culture, and class. Skin care, grooming, and nail care are some areas of concern.

SKIN CARE: It only takes a minute to cleanse, tone and moisturize. Add to your regimen a facial scrub once or twice a week to smooth the complexion, diminish fine lines and wrinkles. The scrub also buffs away dead skin cells as it prepares the skin for a closer shave and combat ingrown hairs.

GROOMING TIPS:
For the record, we love goatees. Gives off a bad boy edge. So take note, there is a science to trimming a goatee. Goatee lines should not exceed your smile line or extend past the furthest part of the chin bone. Your face shape needs to be considered for cutting the corners...not too sharp or rounded. And keep hair length uniform. Trim nose hairs (and ears too). BTW, it is equally important to trim underarm hair (deodorant adheres better to skin to fight odor).
Tools of the Trade: Try WAHL's Groomsman Beard and Mustache Trimmer. Use as a plug in or cordless/$20. Works well with stubborn, coarse hair. For more choices, click here.

NAIL CARE: Guessing you're not a nail biter, you may prefer to DIY. Healthy nails are a priority since men's nails grow faster than ours. Weekly trims are a must along with cuticle treatments. Invest in a manicure set that includes a buffer and scrub brush. It's ok to visit a nail salon for a professional manicure too. Trimmed clean nails speak volumes
Tools of the Trade: Try The Art of Shaving 7-Piece Manicure Set/$160

A Man's Guide to a Winter Coat

An all purpose coat is essential in a man's wardrobe -- one that is not too formal, that travels from workday (with a suit) to weekend (with jeans and a sweater), tailored but not tight. The perfect fit is a three-button wool coat with an U.S. price tag and Italian craftsmanship. JOSEPH ABBOUD has what you need to carry you to Spring.

In addition to the everyday coat, versatile options include new standards:
  • Click here for the Camel Coat.
  • The Duffle Coat started in the British Navy (always owned great style). This coat is ideal against cold weather on weekends and carries the work week suit as well. Look for unexpected elements like leather insets, rope hooks and wood or metal closures. Classic navy (right) works along with a rich earthy shade like olive. Wool and Nylon Duffle by J.PRESS/$725.
  • The Parka Coat is no longer reserved for trips to the slopes. Men are wearing these coats for work and play. The key to pulling it off with a suit is to ensure it's long enough to cover the suit jacket and choose a darker shade for a dressier appearance. Cotton and Nylon Parka by WOOLRICH JOHN RICH & BROS/$675.

MOVEMBER 2010

MOVEMBER is the November celebration that raises money to support research, increase awareness and find a cure for prostrate cancer. The moustache is their "ribbon"...it's a commitment for 30 days comparable to a walk for other charities. The mantra is "Grow a Mo, Help a Bro." It promotes male health and gives a quirky edge to sponsorship.

While many men are passionate about their physique, they frequently neglect comprehensive health checks. Most are quick to see a doctor for broken bones after a football game but lack the same motivation for annual physicals. The goal behind MOVEMBER is to change their viewpoint about their overall health and inform them of potential health risks.

To create your own affair, click here. For events near you, click here. Donations benefit the Prostrate Cancer Foundation (www.pcf.org) and LiveSTRONG which supports young adults and their families battling cancer (WWW.LIVESTRONG.ORG). For questions or assistance, call 310/450.3331.

Pssst... Fellas, I think growing a beard, goatee or side burns counts too! It's sexy and for a good cause. It's not too late to get involved.

Get Your Groom On!

It's not what you think...I'm talking about products for men! Y'all have just as many concoctions: body washes, moisturizers, facial cleansers, scrubs, aftershaves. Admit it, you feel just as good as we do after your daily prep and primp. A few man-tastic toiletries in my home are:

BATH & BODY AROMATHERAPY SENSUAL BODY WASH in Black Currant Vanilla is "infused with a blend of essential oils to heighten sensuality and instill feelings of comfort and confidence." The back of the bottle instructs you to breathe deeply for best results...Love that recommendation because it smells delish!

KIEHL'S FACIAL FUEL ENERGIZING SCRUB combines caffeine, menthol and vitamin E to minimize ingrown hairs and their ULTIMATE MEN'S AFTER SHAVE BALM soothes and moisturizes with avocado oil and cocoa butter...gotta love it.

Then there's tried and true PALMER'S COCOA BUTTER which heals and softens the skin while it smooths scars.

Prefer eco-friendly products? BURT'S BEES NATURAL SKIN CARE FOR MEN contain ingredients that are both gentle and effective. Great reviews for the Bay Rum Aftershave Balm (bay oil is known for its antiseptic and emollient qualities). It banishes the burn with a subtle blend of herbs, spices and natural essential oils. Not bad for $12 at www.burtsbees.com.

Last, invest in a good mustache and beard trimmer set. Check out kits from WAHL, BRAUN or CONAIR. It's money well spent!
