Calling in the BALM Squad

I've been getting inquiries about lip color causing chapped lips and discoloration. I suffer the same problem when I forget to use my trusty lip balm under my gloss. Usually, I apply just enough balm to coat my lips. I want to ensure the color deposits without sliding off.

THE CAUSE: Dry, chapped lips are caused by exposure to the elements, reactions to cosmetic ingredients, medication, dehydration, or repetitive licking of the lips (think LL COOL J).

THE SOLUTION: Go for lip balms that have a high content of natural oils and beeswax. Petroleum-based balms are good too. Those with added sunscreen serve to protect delicate skin. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and maybe consider a humidifier for the bedroom.

THE SOOTHERS:
* NIVEA's A Kiss of Protection Lip Care with SPF 30 $2.49 @ drugstore.com.

  2. Dear Anonymous: It's EARTH DAY so try a natural remedy. Apply lemon juice with a cotton ball. Rinse after 20 minutes and moisturize. Or you can apply raw honey diretly to your face. Best results over time. Prefer a conventional treatment? Try NEUTROGENA Complete Acne Therapy. The acne control lotion reduces redness and inflammation. Hope this helps.

  3. Blackswan,

    Does baking soda help with ingrown hairs? I've mixed baking soda and a little water to wash underneath my neck and have seen it clear up a little. do you know anything about this?

  4. Dear Anonymous...You can also try CLINIQUE's Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector. It's developed by dermatologists to create an even skin tone -- results shown in 4 to 12 weeks.

  5. Dear Anonymous: According to thebeautybrains.com, baking soda is a natural exfoliant. It is PH neutral and a fine powder, which means that it will be gentle on your skin. Because regular exfoliating is recommended to reduce ingrown hairs, it may be working. You can also try an "aspirin mask." 6. pinky, i thought it was just me. when i use any clear lip gloss, i tend to get small black blotches on my lips. will applying a lip balm first solve this problem? i never had these problems in my youth! LOL

  7. Dear Anonymous: Youth...(sigh) It was much easier for me too! Regarding the blotches, its a chemical in the product that's irritating your mouth. Dab some vitamin E oil on your lips at night to fade the spots. In addition to the balm, maybe you should switch the brand of gloss altoghether. Hope this helps!

  8. i will try the vitamin e oil. i actually was using the loreal brand that i had for eons -- thought maybe it was old and so i got one from avon. same thing. then i tried the kiehl's one you had given me -- can't remember if it left spots but i know it just tends to dry my lips.

  9. Fee...That is not good. My recommendation is to use a lip balm during the day. It's soothing and it will give you a bit of shine. If you prefer a bit of color, try a tinted lip balm. Stick with the vitamin E too! Let me know what happens.

  10. Black Swan,

    Are any of these balms scented?

  11. Dear Anonymous: The Badger Balms are scented similar to the ingredients and the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment has a fresh citrus scent.
